When we first heard about HIV and AIDS, we whispered out of fear. As leaders, we need to talk openly and to learn from each other’s journeys of living with and being deeply affected by HIV. These touching journeys of life and love beyond HIV reflect the rainbow people of Africa. This is the time for us to be united as Africans and citizens of the world to embrace and support all people living with and affected by HIV.

I invite you to read Bhatupe Mhango’s story, Kufinya mandimu, kukonza chakumwa, where she opens up her life experiences to the rest of the world. It is not easy to write about living with HIV, yet Bhatupe shares what it is like to live with the virus that has caused so much distress and taken so many lives. She gives leadership and support to people who are still in hiding and who live an isolated life due to their HIV status.
Bhatupe is a role model to many of us who share the struggle she has lived through. Her story will be a light to many Malawians, many young women and all other people. I salute Bhatupe for living an open life and stepping where even ‘angels fear to tread’. Through her personal journey, she informs us that HIV is preventable, AIDS is manageable, and that we can reverse the tide of AIDS and AIDS-related deaths.
I know Bhatupe as one of the people who can turn adversity into opportunity. I hope her story will motivate many of us to address the challenges that young women of Bhatupe's age have encountered and continue to face. There is no faith that can surpass our commitment to open our hearts and share our lives so that others learn what it means to live with HIV in this world of stigma, shame, denial and discrimination.
