When we first heard about HIV and AIDS, we whispered out of fear. As leaders, we need to talk openly and to learn from each other’s journeys of living with and being deeply affected by HIV. The first short story in this wonderful Whisper not collection is a tale of survival against the odds by Nombeko Mpongo. In her heartfelt poetry, Nombeko shares her numbing pain in contracting HIV through being brutally gang-raped.
These touching journeys of life and love beyond HIV reflect the rainbow people of Africa. This is the time for us to be united as Africans and citizens of the world to embrace and support all people living with and affected by HIV.

Nombeko Mpongo's story makes us ask all sorts of questions about how effective family and community are in raising children and giving much needed support. At a tender age, Nombeko went through very difficult and tough times, yet committed unwaveringly to embracing life in a positive way. She excels in self-agency, a lesson for all of us that, if you do not stand on your two feet and claim your right to live, no one will grant it to you.
Nombeko is a great leader and I encourage you to read her story: Anyway in English and Nakanjani in isiXhosa. In both the church and in the community, she has helped many people come to terms with who they are and not allow memories of the past to shatter their expectations of the future.
